What Makeup Is Suitable for the Water?

Summer is approaching and you’re surely already looking forward to heading to the water. Whether your destination is a city pool, the pond at grandma’s, or the crystal-clear sea, one thing is certain. You need to protect your skin from the sun. Your makeup also needs to be adapted to these specific conditions.

Summer makeup specifics

Are you getting ready to sunbathe and swim? Focus primarily on your skin and protecting it from the sun. If you can’t do without makeup, buy a BB cream or cream makeup with a UV filter. In a pinch, you can also mix your regular makeup with sunscreen and apply it to your face as usual.

Don’t overdo your makeup for the water. Remember that you’ll not only be swimming, but you’ll probably be sweating too. So don’t unnecessarily burden your skin with heavy makeup. If possible, skip makeup altogether.

Use only products labeled as waterproof. Foundations, eyeshadows, and blushes should be silicone-based; products containing hydrophobic waxes, oils, and polymers are suitable. Definitely don’t use powder cosmetic products—they wash off right away in water. Keep in mind that products with a creamy consistency are more suitable.

Eye and lip makeup

Use waterproof mascara on your eyes. But it’s no longer true that waterproof mascara has to be the peak of water-ready makeup. You can also use eyeshadow or eyeliner. Just always make sure in advance that the products you choose are waterproof. Ideally, test everything first in the comfort of your home so you won’t be unpleasantly surprised at the pool.

For lips, a light tint or gloss that looks fresh is ideal.

If you can’t go without lipstick, apply a transfer-proof lipstick. A lipstick with an oily texture that won’t dissolve in water is also suitable. If you can do without bold lips during summer days, use a lip balm with a UV filter instead.

Tip for you: Match your eyeshadow color to the shade of your swimsuit. Don’t be afraid of bold colors—even ones you don’t normally use.
